The strength of branches used as temporary anchor points in trees
Failure of temporary anchor points in a tree is one of the major risks faced by climbing arborists. While a number of studies investigated material properties of branches up to 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter, little is known about strength of anchor points commonly used in climbing and dismantling operations. In a research project funded by the British Health and Safety Executive, the Forestry Commission and the TREE Fund, winching tests were performed on standing trees. Branches and limbs of diameters up to 30 cm were loaded to fracture. Mechanical properties like stiffness, yield strength and ultimate strength were determined by analysing data from strain and load sensors, and the failure process was tracked in calibrated video footage.
Energy dissipation in a “snubbed off” rigging scenario
Energy dissipation in a worst-case rigging scenario was investigated in the course of a comprehensive study for the British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Forestry Commission. The way different components interact with each other, and the way energy is dissipated into these components was studied during a number of tests both in the field and in a laboratory. By using motion tracking technique on video footage and applying specialised load and strain sensors, the deformations in the rigging system (including the tree) were determined. From the findings of this study, current models for energy dissipation and peak force estimation were refined.
